Alex Martinis Roe presents her new commission at The Showroom To Become Two in conversation with Helena Reckitt, Senior Lecturer in Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London.
To Become Two stems from Martinis Roe's ongoing engagement with international feminist communities and their political practices. By using various methods such as participant observation, oral history interviewing, and archival research, she offers proposals for how to grapple with contemporary society through feminist methodologies.
In the film Our Future Network (2016), in which Helena Reckitt was a participant, Martinis Roe established a new network which resulted in the development of twenty propositions for feminist collective political practices. Together they will discuss the process of making this film, the wider project and its evolvement at The Showroom.
Helena Reckitt is a curator and researcher with a longstanding engagement with histories and contemporary legacies of feminist and queer artistic and critical practice. She is editor of the books Art and Feminism and Sanja Ivekovic: Unknown Heroine, and, with Jennifer Fisher, of two recent issues of the Journal of Curatorial Studies on affect and curating, and relationality and affect. In 2015 she worked with six feminist curators and artists to develop the programme Now You Can Go across four London arts venues, including The Showroom, which explored the transmission and resonance of Italian feminist practices.

To Become Two is co-commissioned by ar/ge kunst (Bolzano); Casco – Office for Art, Design and Theory, (Utrecht); If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution (Amsterdam) and The Showroom (London). The accompanying workshops and performances are co-commissioned by the Keir Foundation. The project was produced with the support of the Graduiertenschule der Universität der Künste Berlin and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, and its arts funding and advisory body. At The Showroom the exhibition is supported by Creative Victoria.
The project will be presented by Badischer Kunstverein (Karlsruhe) 8 September – 26 November 2017.

Alex Martinis Roe b. 1982 (Melbourne, Australia) is an artist based in Berlin. Her current projects focus on feminist genealogies and seek to foster specific and productive relations between different generations as a way of participating in the construction of feminist histories and futures.
