Gaze: On the Verge of the Visible explores the intimate conversations and works developed during the Gaze: Analogue/Digital Photography workshop led by artist Jennifer Martin. This is an opportunity to publicly discuss Gaze the project which queries the site where epidermis, vision, and apparatus meet. Martin will be in conversation with Showroom Curatorial Fellow Teresa Cisneros.
The project encompasses a series of workshops, which directly engage with histories of racialised representation. Working collectively, where participants seek to disturb visibility and find approaches to impeding an inherently racialised sight. Together, they approach the question of how does one refute racist typologies governed by sight whilst working with the visual? The workshop process engages with testimony, discussion, and creative working on methods of representation.
The Gaze: Analogue/Digital Photography workshop focuses on racialized representation within photography. In approaching the digital photograph, participants explore methods of manipulating the digital image in its making rather than in the editing of the image. Utilizing a range of materials and tools, participants are prompted to navigate from a place of ‘truth’ or ‘accurate representation’ towards what they believe constitutes the opposite of this.
Gaze is supported by the Durham Wharf Foundation and ReachOutRCA (the Royal College of Art’s outreach programme) and will take place between August and October 2017 across London with support from South London Gallery and The Showroom.
