Amina Ahmed was born in East Africa, of Kutchi Turk Indian heritage. She grew up in England and has lived in Iran and the USA. She currently lives and works in New Jersey, USA.
An educator and activist, Ahmed is a former board member for the Muslim Women’s Institute for Research and Development, New York, and advisory board member for Women’s Voices Now and Twelve Gates Arts, Philadelphia, USA. Her projects are inspired by human rights, coalition-building, Islamic art, Folk art and geometry in nature.
Ahmed graduated from Winchester School of Art and Chelsea School of Art. She received her MA in Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts from the Royal College of Art, London where she was awarded a bursary and the Barakak Trust Prize.
Ahmed's work has been exhibited internationally, at the The Lincoln Center, New York; Jersey City Museum, New Jersey; Queens Museum, New York; Twelve Gates Gallery Philadelphia, Lakeeran Gallery, Mumbai; Slick, Paris; India Art Fair, New Delhi; FiberPhiladelphia International Biennial, Philadelphia; Alwan for the Arts, New York; Clark House Initiative and the Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum, Mumbai, India.
She is currently a studio resident at Mana Contemporary, New Jersey, USA.
